Week 8

This week the mentor came to Savannah and gave detailed comments on each shot during the debriefing. Therefore, I will modify the background of shots two and four, and assist Ethan in finishing shot 5.

And since the following report is in week 9, I will also composite all the shots and do the final color grading.

Shot 1

I updated the camera motion of this shot and handed in Maria to render it. Then I added motion blur and depth of field in Nuke.

Shot 2

Ethan rendered two versions of the speaker. One is lit, and one is not. Then I added the glow effect to the lit version and used roto to fake the light animation.

The black-and-white contrast of this shot is stronger than any other shots, so I adjusted the contrast of some of the light and reduced the saturation of the speakers a little. Depth of field and motion blur are also added.

Shot 3

Ethan and I decided to render the object and the background separately to make this shot easier to adjust. The shadows are also in a separate layer so that I can composite them together.
I adjusted the color of the background in Nuke to make the entire shot more uniform in tone. Blur was also added so that the texture of the background would be visible while not distracting the viewer from the subject matter.

Shot 4

Based on what I did last week, I adjusted the color of the background to make it more similar to shot 2.

Light & Layout

Our team met on Sunday and work for shot 5 together. Ethan have already did a basic plate, so we refined based on his work.

Changed the color of texture. We're going to have the main light source projected from the top, and then add some rim light for the rocks and speakers

Then I rearranged the rocks. I want the rocks to surround the speaker so that the main body of the speaker can be highlighted. And let the edge of the rock roughly form a downward curve.

I again adjusted the color temperature of the light and material so that it tends to be off-white. I adjusted the rim light of the rock to a warmer color so that it would still appear warm after neutralizing with the material.

I added a spotlight from the top back of the speaker so it can create a nice circle shape reflection on the floor and also helped highlight the subject.
